The beauty of simplicity shone brightly in Perth last night.
The closing show in the long-awaited Simon and Garfunkel tour of Australia was a perfect study of what you can do with two voices, a guitar, beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics.
It’s been decades since they performed in Australia together and even longer since their first hit. Act 1 of a three-act evening at Burswood Dome brought the classics early, including I Am a Rock, America and A Hazy Shade of Winter.
Scarborough Fair was so perfect, you could hear a pin drop and was followed by Homeward Bound. Mrs Robinson, Sound of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Water were other highlights in the evening.
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel talked of their enduring friendship, which began at primary school. It has become a journey through the American song book of life, love, hope, faith and exploration. They held the audience in the palm of their hand and their voices held the same magic they had when they were 10 years old singing Hey School Girl.
