Jason Mraz and That Secret Show ... Kevin Was There
Mr A-Z’s Brisbane Show

Eric Hutchinson introduced him as the singer who lost his arm in a shark attack at The Great Barrier Reef and had it replaced with a prosthetic one that helps him play guitar even better than his real one.
It’s not true of course, but it had the audience cheering so loudly by the time Jason Mraz walked out that I almost wished I’d taken ear-plugs!
The last time Jason Mraz played in Brisbane was about a year ago at The Tivoli. So the first thing I noticed tonight was how the audience had doubled in size; the Southbank Convention Centre was about 20 empty chairs away from being sold out. Jason noticed it too, and to all the fans that must have asked him to play another intimate show, he simply said “Don’t tell anyone else about this!”
I know the guy can sing, but I’d forgotten how funny he is. He admitted to having a little crush on the ‘pizza slice section’ and the ‘pecan pie section’ (the seats in the corners of the room), and then got everyone, and I mean EVERYONE repeating lyrics, vocal scales and whistling. He had us giving him air high fives and low fives throughout a whole song, and he even got a Mexican wave going.
The show ended a lot earlier than the Ticketek website had said it would, and Jason didn’t play as many new songs as I’d imagined. It was more of a chilled out, instrumental jam session with the brass section taking over for a while so that he could take Polaroids of his 7-piece band to give to the audience.
He finished up with ‘Butterfly’, his very sexy “song for all the shoe models” from his last album, ‘We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things’.
Look it up, it’s hot!
